The Munros are all those mountains in Scotland that are more than 3000 ft (914.4 mtrs) high.

There are currently 284 of them (as defined by the Scottish Mountaineering Club). They are named after Sir Hugh Munro (1856–1919) who produced the first list of them in 1891.

Some people like to attempt to climb all 284 of them; this is a pursuit known as "munro bagging". Doing that, and whipping your kit off at some point, and sending us in the pictures, is known as Naked Munro Bagging! Wahay!

Despite their modest height, many of the Munros offer a very serious proposition to the climber or walker, and are not to be taken lightly. The weather can be very severe, and very changeable. Several people are killed every year on the Scottish mountains, and our Mountain Rescue Teams are kept very busy indeed. So whether your Munro Bagging is of the naked variety or not, make sure you are properly equipped.

But the Munros are fantastic. Climbing them offers you fun, fresh air, exercise, cameraderie and some of the most amazing scenery in the world. Most of them are easily accessible (there's always a handy pub!) and all of them are worth whatever effort it takes.

So go for it. And most importantly, send us your pics!

Over the next couple of months we will be adding a complete Munro Directory.
